Anyone who knows me knows I love music. I love how the notes just go together to form a melody. I love how chords combine to make beautiful harmony, and I love how the beating drums vibrate my soul.
But what I love about some songs is how the lyrics stimulate deep thoughts. They evoke feelings of wonderment, fervor and encouragement. They awaken a will to move forward. And just like food, they mean something different to everyone… they do something different for everyone.
This morning some lyrics just hit me.
“I’m just trying to survive.
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love.
Fear’s a powerful thing.”
— Bruce Springsteen
Bruce may have intended the lyrics to mean something different, but that’s the beauty of song. How do these words resonate with me?
Many of us are just trying to make it, whether that means financially, making a name for ourselves, or just trying to make it through each day without falling over or losing our cool. The question is, what are you doing to survive, whatever it is you’re trying to survive? Is it “kill[ing] the things you love”? Is it interfering with what makes you happy, or cutting into valuable time with your loved ones?
Are you afraid to change what you’re doing? Are you afraid to take a risk? “Fear’s a powerful thing,” but what if I said that if you don’t make that change, your life will pass by, you’ll continue to struggle to get up in the morning, and you might not get to experience the harmony and happiness needed to thrive. Survive or thrive. Which one will you choose?
